The Lower School is staffed by a highly qualified
lay and religious faculty. Small class sizes provide
frequent interaction between teacher and learner.
In addition to the grade level teacher, there are
special teachers in the fields of art, music, Spanish,
physical education and library. A full-time nurse
services the health office and certified guidance
personnel are available through the upper school
and the districts.
The curriculum offered in the Lower School is child centered,
integrative and holistic, meeting and exceeding NYS Learning Standards.
Emphasis
on literacy and whole language begins in kindergarten and continues
throughout the grades. The math curriculum is patterned after a whole
language approach and emphasizes problem solving through the use of manipulatives. Science is taught through hands-on projects or experiences
and computer literacy develops as a communications learning tool.
Catholic beliefs and values inform the total school environment
particularly in the study of religion. During second grade,
students prepare
to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist in their home
parishes and in the sixth grade, topics provide readiness for Confirmation.
Lower School students enjoy a variety of activities.
