Founded in 1856,
the Academy of Saint Joseph is a private Catholic school
conducted by the Sisters
of Saint Joseph of Brentwood, New York.
Situated on a beautiful 200 acre campus, it is accredited by the New York State Board of
Regents and by the Middle States
Association of Colleges and Schools and the
National Catholic Educational Association
.

The Academy of Saint Joseph High School is an
all girls, catholic high school. This
single gender environment provides our students
the opportunity to excel in all areas without the distractions and social
pressures a co-ed environment often includes. Our young women are used
to exercising leadership roles. Their open discussions, whether
unedited and unscripted or formal PowerPoint®
presentations, are always
respectful and cover the gamut of the sublime, the ridiculous and everything
in between! Thoughtful self-expression and mind-changing research are
encouraged. The Academy is about learning, growth, change and service.
The ASJ Girl of today comes from diverse
ethnic, religious, language, national and socio-economic backgrounds.
This rich diversity contributes to the environment of learning that is ASJ.
National Foreign Language Week, our Thanksgiving Liturgy, the
Inter-religious Dialogue Week are among the annual and biennial events that
celebrate our diversity and foster greater understanding among our students
and their families.
There is a warm and familial environment that
exists among all ASJ students. The Lower
School (K - 5th Grade) and the Middle School
(6th - 8th Grades) are co-ed. Many of our ASJ High School girls
are, in fact, "big sisters" to students in grades K - 8!! There are a
number of families whose brothers, sisters, cousins and, yes, aunts and
uncles are part of the educational adventure that is ASJ. Many of the
high school students are also Reading Buddies and subject tutors for
students in the lower grades. The girls in the Spanish Honor Society
assist the Lower and Middle School Spanish teachers by presenting classes on
basic vocabulary and grammar topics.
Our Parent Fellowship
has become an important feature of ASJ life. Only several years old,
the group reaches out to other parents to help make them feel at home at
ASJ. Their Newsletter helps foster Connections, parent-to-parent.
Their opening of the year gathering welcomes new families while
strengthening the bonds among returning families. Their gratitude
luncheon in the spring honors ASJ Faculty, Staff and Administration.
Various fundraisers, in conjunction with our Department of Development and
Advancement, help the Academy to respond to the economic demands of its
educational program.
The ASJ Alumnae is a vast
network of graduates down through the years. Class reunions and yearly
gatherings in Florida and New York City as well as here at the Academy bring
together the extended ASJ family. The Alumnae pages on this site
enable classmates and friends separated by miles and years to come close to
one another and to the alma mater that helped to shape their
dreams and to launch their futures.
This vast campus, this architecturally rich set of
interconnected buildings, this challenging academic program and mission
could not be what it is nor succeed without the dedicated staff that helps
keep it running and shining. Maintenance and Custodial Staff, Food
Service personnel, and Administrative Support Staff are dedicated to the
educational mission of the Academy and to every person who embraces it.
Finally, the mission of the Academy is an extension
of the Gospel mission of the Sisters of Saint Joseph: "The Mission of
the Academy is clear: to love God and to love the dear neighbor without
distinction." Every morning's call to prayer begins with this
reminder. The presence of the Sisters at daily Mass in the chapel of
the Sacred Heart, their dedicated service to others, their on-going
commitment to the mission of reconciliation, unity, and love are the
foundation and inspiration to all of us. It is truly their mission; we
are privileged to share in it.
